about

'Patchwork' was exactly that - a patchwork of songs intended for various other projects. Some left over from the 2007 recordings for 'Turning Circles' (Nowhere Girl, What's Going On, Listen to You),
Some from the 2008 'Dot the i' sessions that didn't fit the upbeat power pop theme we settled on (Where I'm From, Lucky that the Heart, I Won't Rise, State that Remains)
Some songs that were already written and intended for the next record 'Abelay Hotel' (Breakdown, Making Time to Talk)
Some of the remaining songs were picked from the vast pile of unreleased songs that was growing rapidly during the most prolific writing phase of my life. (Travelling Song, Patchwork)

After playing a show in Liverpool's Cavern club in May 2008, we met Jerker Emanuelson from Sound Asleep Records who almost immediately offered to release a Dropkick CD on his Swedish label. We were so happy to do so! Although we had recently released 'Do the i' (March 2008), we knew there were loads of songs we could put together in some coherent, yet ramshackle fashion. The songs fell together easily with a loose, almost alt.country feel in places, underlined by the use of acoustic guitars, pedal steel, banjo and mandolin throughout. It felt a million miles from the noisy pop of 'Dot the i'. Originally released in November 2008, this became the first of many releases we put out with Sound Asleep Records in Sweden. 'Patchwork' may not have been the most polished set of recordings we ever made but it is still a collection of songs among our best and one I'm very proud of.

Having been unavailable on CD for many years and absent from any digital streaming sites, I always intended to revisit these songs one day. Dropkick haven't stopped playing some of these songs live, even with changing band line ups over the years. Despite no longer being actively involved in new Dropkick music, I know Alastair and Roy Taylor are happy that this re-release takes place too. I was keen to look into the Dropkick archive and find recordings that were made around the same time- some by the band and others mainly solo- to see what other songs were considered and might have been included on the original CD. I hope you'll find some that were worth revealing. A few of the bonus tracks appeared later in re-recorded versions on other album projects:
Abelay Hotel (picking it apart, If I lose it), the Andrew solo album 'From the Outside Looking in' (won't you talk to me), the 2nd Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness album (Rose Tinted specs - later to become Rose Tinted Glass) and the 2010 Xmas EP (Follow me down, Up on the Hill - albeit with alternative lyrics). I've also included a rehearsal room live recording of Roy Taylor's 'Lucky that the Heart', a highlight of the original album and the last recording we ever made with our much-missed cousin, Stuart Low.

I hope you'll enjoy revisiting the album too, or perhaps enjoy hearing this important part of our musical history for the first time.

Cheers,

Andrew Taylor
