During the first Covid-19 lockdown in April 2020, I wrote and completed a lot of songs from unused audio clips of little melodies and chord progressions I had stored on my phone, thought up during the previous year. With all Dropkick shows cancelled, our rehearsal space locked up, and no band activity possible, I got time to work on them and make a completely unplanned album in my garage. A few weeks later I found myself recording another one but with superb remote, home contributions from my brother Alastair, my best chum and Dropkick stalwart Ian and long-time collaborator, friend and top musician, Iain Sloan. We called ourselves The Harmonizers.
Predictably, with life and our bands still on hold, this lockdown project continued with more songs in June, before I made another solo, more downbeat, acoustic effort in October 2020. In normal times, those 40 songs would have formed the basis of a new Dropkick album, a solo release or my contribution to another Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness record.
At the beginning of 2021, I decided to pick the best songs from the previous year for a proper vinyl, CD and digital release, believing there was a strong album to be sequenced from all the tracks. Knowing some of my favourite songs from the lockdown releases did not originally have input from The Harmonizers, I asked them to help re-record and improve them. Inevitably, I threw another new song at them too (It’s Misery Again), and we completed this 14-track album.
I am really proud of these songs -some of them are definitely my best - and I’m hugely grateful to Ian, Alastair and Iain for investing their time and energy into these recordings during the oddest, grimmest year.

Hailing from the east coast of Scotland, Dropkick have drawn on influences such as Wilco, Teenage Fanclub and Tom Petty to
produce their own blend of harmony-driven, power-pop for well over a decade.
“Those who have yet to latch onto them are surely missing something special....Indie, powerpop, accomplished harmonies, alt.country tendencies. What’s not to love?” The Herald newspaper...more

The indie pop on Songs From Another Life sounds confident yet delicate, and the strummy and jangly guitars makes me long for spring. Some songs sound like straight up Teenage Fanclub worship, but in a good way. Fans of The Byrds and Big Star will probably dig this as well. Niek || Add To Wantlist

Remember how Bill Murray woke up to I Got You Babe every day in Groundhog Day? If that song would have been Made Of Moods, he at the very least experienced three and a half perfect minutes each day. It’s one of those songs that I enjoy each and every second of, with it’s jangly guitars and hushed vocals that almost have a Beach Boys vibe, especially in the verse. Truly, it’s a song for the ages. But the best news about Still Life is that it offers eleven additional underground pop gems. Niek || Add To Wantlist
